How Does Morse Code Work?
Morse code works by turning every letter and number into a unique pattern of two signals — a short dot and a long dash — and using carefully timed gaps to separate them. That's the whole system. Its genius is doing so much with so little: just "on" and "off," plus timing.
Dots, dashes, and timing
Everything in Morse code is measured in one basic unit of time:
- A dot is 1 unit long.
- A dash is 3 units long.
- The gap between symbols in a letter is 1 unit.
- The gap between letters is 3 units.
- The gap between words is 7 units.
Because the meaning lives in the timing — not in any particular medium — the same code can be a beep, a light flash, a tap, or a pulse of electricity. This is why Morse code has survived every change in technology.
Building letters from signals
Each character is a short run of dots and dashes. E is one dot (.), T is one dash (-), A is dot-dash (.-), and O is three dashes (---). String letters together with the right gaps and you spell words: .... .. is H-I. You can look up every pattern on the Morse code chart, or convert text and code both ways in the translator.
Why common letters are short
Morse code wasn't assigned randomly. The most frequently used English letters got the shortest codes so real messages would be quick to send. That's why E and T — the two most common letters — are a single dot and a single dash, while rare letters like Q (--.-) and X (-..-) are longer. It's an early example of efficient design: optimize for the common case.
One code, many media
- Sound: short and long beeps (radio, buzzers). Try the audio tool.
- Light: short and long flashes (signal lamps, torches). Try the light tool.
- Touch: short and long taps or presses — useful as an accessibility input.
- Electricity: short and long pulses down a wire, the original telegraph method.
Frequently asked questions
How does Morse code represent letters? Each letter is a unique sequence of dots (short) and dashes (long), separated from other letters by timed gaps.
How long is a dash compared to a dot? A dash is three times as long as a dot. Gaps are timed too: one unit within a letter, three between letters, seven between words.
Why can Morse code be sent as sound or light? Because the meaning is in the timing of "on" and "off," not the medium. Any on/off signal — beep, flash, tap, or pulse — can carry it.
