What Is Morse Code?
Morse code is a method of encoding text characters as sequences of two signals — a short one called a dot (or dit) and a long one called a dash (or dah). By stringing these signals together, any letter, number, or punctuation mark can be sent as sound, light, or electrical pulses, which makes Morse code one of the simplest and most durable ways to send a message over distance.

How Morse code works
Each character has its own unique pattern of dots and dashes. A dash lasts about three times as long as a dot. Within a letter the signals are separated by a short gap, letters are separated by a medium gap, and words by a longer gap. For example, the word HI is .... .. — four dots for H, a gap, then two dots for I. Because the timing carries the meaning, the same code can travel as beeps on a radio, flashes from a lamp, taps on a table, or clicks down a telegraph wire.

What is Morse code used for?
For most of the 19th and 20th centuries, Morse code was the backbone of long-distance communication — first over telegraph wires, then over radio for ships, aircraft, and the military. Its most famous use is the distress signal SOS (... --- ...), chosen because it's simple and unmistakable.
Today Morse code is no longer required for most commercial or maritime communication, but it's far from dead. Amateur (ham) radio operators still use it because it cuts through noise and weak signals better than voice. It's used in aviation to identify navigation beacons, as an accessibility tool for people with limited mobility, and by hobbyists, puzzle-makers, and jewelry designers.
